Open Water News - September 2016

West District Open Water at Loch Ken, Castle Douglas on Saturday 3 September proved another successful meet for our team of Libby and Euan Mcmeekin, Rachel and Jack Calvert, Matthew Dwane and Jake Love. Unfortunately, the weather conditions werent as favourable as last year but this didnt stop our swimmers. First up was Jake in the 4km where he came 4th in the Mens Senior Age Group, a 5th in West District and a 6th overall.

Next came the 1km and 2 km races which were swam together due to the weather. So the Race started with 29 swimmers in the water!! Again our swimmers were up to the challenge with Jack coming in first place in the 1km and securing himself as a West District Champion. Next came Jake in second place in the Mens Seior 2km and a second place in the West District as well. Matthew got himself into a fourth place finish in the Junior Age 13-14 and a second place in the West District with Euan in 6th place and 5th in West District. Rachel was second in the Ladies 15-16 Age making her West District Champion and Libby came 5th giving her a 4th place in West District.

Finally, came the the relay. Our usual team of Matthew, Rachel, Libby and Jake proved to be successful yet again. This time there was a twist to the relay courtesy of Lynne Deans, after much badgering from the Grangemouth team last year. Thank you to Lynne for this fun ending to the day. The swimmers had to complete a circuit which included an obstacle as shown in the photos!! This was to prove the undoing of some but where others shone. Matthew started the team off, handing over to Rachel who closed the gap considerably. Next was Libby who proved an absolute asset on the obstacle and got the team into third. Last up was Jake who bought the team home in second place. Well done team! Another great day, great venue, great company and most of all fantastic swims from our team. Onwards to East District next Sunday.

Open Water News - June 2016

The Open Water season started in fantastic fashion.  The first venue of the season was for the Midland District Championship at Monikie Country Park.  This was a new venue for this event and proved very popular.  The Grangemouth team was made up of Cara Mullan, Kate McDonald, Libby and Euan McMeekin, Jake Love and two new additions, Morgan Bell and Matthew Dwane.

Thankfully the weather held for the entire day and all swimmers swam brilliantly, fully completing the course in their designated swims.  In the morning Jake secured a fourth place in the Senior Men’s 5km, Morgan came first in his novice age group 1.5km and Libby gained a silver medal in the 1.5km age group.  In the afternoon Cara got a silver medal in the 3km age group and Jake secured a bronze medal in the Senior Men’s 3km and finally, the relay team of Jake, Cara, Libby and Morgan gained a bronze medal.

This venue was a qualifier for the British Championship in Sheffield and three of our swimmers qualified - Cara, Matthew and Jake.

All in all, a fantastic day, amazing swims from all and some cracking results.  Congratulations to all the swimmers on making such a great start to the season.

Long may it continue!

Swim camp 2013:

Swim Camp 2013 was a 'Beach Party' theme at St. Leonards School St. Andrews from Friday 2nd August to Sunday 4th August.  GASC Swimcamp 2013

It was a fantastic weekend where the kids worked hard both in the pool and in land training.

They met 'Andy Murray', his girlfriend Kim and mother Judy who answered questions on 'How to Become the Best'.  They also had loads and loads of laughs with the team games down on the beach, pool relay games and doing their 'Farewell Tribal Dance'.

Well done to all the swimmers, coaches and helpers and a BIG thank you to Clydesdale Bank who sponsored the weekend.

Congratulations to Ryan Retson (12), who took part in the Ryan Retson Welsh Nationals Medal Winner
Welsh Nationals at the end of July 2013, winning 11 Gold medals.

Ryan had a fantastic meet winning no less than 11 GOLD and 1 SILVER medal.  Ryan won Gold in 50m backstroke breaking the West District Record (fastest male of that age in the whole of the West District - EVER), 100 & 200 backstroke, 100 butterfly, 50, 200, 400 & 1500 freestyle, 200 Individual Medley, and in 2 relays and Silver in 50 fly silver.
